Hi! So I just joined this tribe. I saw the documentary on Franken, "God Spoke", and I'm just so amazed at how he goes at it. He's up against, well you know, such lying liars. You must see the movie! I'm so impressed with how he doesn't lose it when being lied to face to face. It must be so frustrating, I would probably scream and cry and then get really depressed. Long live Franken!

Anyone else in the LA area going? I can't wait - I'll report back.

Patriot Act provisions renewal blocked in Senate

Well, I don't know if it was the petitions or just disgruntled Senators, but the Senate just rejected reauthorizing expiring provisions of the Patriot Act.

If you signed any petitions or phoned your Senators, GREAT WORK! Your medical, library, video rental, business records, etc, are a whole lot safer because of it (I think). Your vigilance is appreciated and your children will thank you in the future.

Hey, I don't know if anyone has heard any clear and specific counter-arguement to Bill O'Reilly's contention that the ACLU is "for" Child Porn, but I have some crazy religious family members who believe that without question and I would like to arm myself with knowledge before the holidays. Does anyone have a link on the wen they could provide me with to study stating that they are indeed NOT protecting our right to view child pornography? Thanks!

OHIO MAY GET RECOUNT!!!

http://www.accuracy.org/press_releases/PR111504.htm

Ohio: Official Recount Now Expected
November 15, 2004

DAVID COBB, [via Blair Bobier, b2@bobierlaw.com], www.votecobb.com
Cobb was the 2004 presidential candidate for the Green Party. He said today: "We announced our intention to seek a recount of the vote in Ohio. Since the required fee for a statewide recount is $113,600, the only question was whether that money could be raised in time to meet the filing deadline. That question has been answered. Thanks to the thousands of people who have contributed to this effort, we can say with certainty that there will be a recount in Ohio." The Green Party is working with the Libertarian Party in securing a recount. The presidential candidates for the two parties have demanded that Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, a Republican who co-chaired this year's Bush campaign in Ohio, recuse himself from the recount process.

The media director for the Cobb-LaMarche campaign, Blair Bobier, said today: "The Ohio presidential election was marred by numerous press and independent reports of mis-marked and discarded ballots, problems with electronic voting machines and the targeted disenfranchisement of African-American voters. A number of citizens' groups and voting rights organizations are holding the second of two hearings today in Columbus, Ohio, to take testimony from voters, poll watchers and election experts about problems with the Ohio vote. The hearing, from 6 to 9 p.m., will be held at the Courthouse, meeting room A, 373 S. High St., in Columbus." For more information, see: www.caseohio.org.

JOHN BONIFAZ, JBonifaz@nvri.org, www.nvri.org
General counsel for the National Voting Rights Institute, Bonifaz is the lawyer for the recount effort. He said today: "We must ensure that all votes are properly counted."

JONATHAN TURLEY, jturley@law.gwu.edu, www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6452480
Turley is a professor of constitutional law at George Washington University; he is not connected to the recount efforts. Turley said today: "Electors are certified on Dec. 7. They actually vote on Dec. 13. But those votes are not opened by Congress until Jan. 6. So there is still time to challenge the results in Ohio -- as well as other close states such as New Mexico, Iowa and Nevada."

Turley added: "I was surprised on the morning after the election. I was legal analyst with CBS News for the election and we did not go off the air until 6 a.m. At that time, due to the reports and my conversation with Kerry attorneys, I expected a challenge. Kerry's statement the day after the election that there were not enough provisional ballots to have any chance to alter the result of the election may have been true, but it was a bit misleading since provisional ballots are only part of the story. There were also absentee ballots, there were reports of substantial pockets of election problems, and allegations of over-voting and machine malfunction. In addition, over 70 percent of Ohio's votes were done with punch cards. We know that when you do a challenge to those, they tend to turn over. So there is room to challenge Ohio and other states. This is not to say that a recount is likely to change the result of the election, but it is not an impossibility."

I just got back from viewing the first half of the show at Pantages Theater in DT Mpls. The place was packed and it was a lot of fun! The crowd was amped! It was such a treat seeing the show broadcast live. Guests included Leo Kotke(who played some awesome music to which Al sung along), Mpls Mayor RT Rybak, Michael Stipe, and more. Al and Katherine were in true form.
It was somewhat reminiscent of A Prarie Home Companion. I think they could be on to something.

Finally, Air America in San Francisco

The Air America Radio network premiered this past week on 960 AM - The Quake. I don't know why there were so many delays in bringing the network here, SF being such a natural market for liberal talk radio, but thankfully we here in the Bay area can finally tune in. I had been listening via the internet, but now 960 is programmed into the car radio.

Franken on Sundance Channel

A couple of nights ago, I tuned into The Sundance Channel to check out Franken's show. He's attempting to emulate Howard Stern by doing video recordings of his radio broadcast.

He even invited a Republican stripper onto his show, over the objections of his bookish assistant. She debated Boston Globe columnist Tom Oliphant on Iraq and the presidential race (obviously a one-sided affair).

While I like Franken's approach to political commentary way more than Michael Moore's, I think Al is just as unfunny today as he was on Saturday Night Live decades ago.

Things you have to believe...

Things you have to believe to be a Republican today:

1. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

2. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

3. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

4. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

5. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

6. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

7. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

8. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

9. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

10. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

11. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are creationism should be taught in schools.

12. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

13. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

14. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's drunk driving record is none of our business.

15. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness, and you need our prayers for your recovery.

16. You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the right to adopt.

17. What Bill Clinton did in his private life in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in his professional and political life in the '80s is irrelevant.

18. John Kerry, after enlisting to fight in Vietnam, earning multiple medals for heroism and leadership, returns home to lobby against the war after his experiences, is "unfit" to be Commander-in-Chief, butGeorge Bush getting into the Texas Air National Guard through his daddy's influence and then repeatedly fails to report for duty because he'd rather get drunk and high is "better able to defend America."

19. Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, Welfare, even public education are all dangerous socialism, but corporate welfare, bailing out companies (Chrysler, the airlines, etc.), farm subsidies, allowing off-shore incorporation to avoid taxes are all free market policies.

20. Government should not interfere with the business, commercial, environmental welfare of the nation, but should control and regulate citizen's personal affairs.
Lies & the Lying Liars - Out in Paperback

"Lies And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair And Balanced Look At the Right" is now out in paperback, for all of you who don't know it yet (yes, I'm sure there are some people who don't yet know this--possibly they're living in a cave somewhere along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border).

There is some new material in there, mostly concerned with updates on the O'Lielly issues (update on Jeremy Glick, new chapter about the Fox lawsuit). Altogether I rather enjoyed reading the new material.

Also, Molly Ivins has a new book out, "Who Let the Dogs In?" I have a copy set aside at Halfprice Books.

So is anyone planning on buying the paperback? Or do you think your hardcover is sufficient?

Kerry's Ideas For the Military

This was taken from the Bush vs Kerry tribe, and I think it warrants posting here:

----------------------------------------------------------------

http://fairuse.1accesshost.com/news2/dn.htm

What if John Kerry Wins?
By WILLIAM MATTHEWS

If John Kerry becomes U.S. president, defense budgets will keep going up, he says - but how that money is spent is going to change.

Budgets have to keep rising "for a period, unavoidably," the Democratic presidential hopeful said in a June 24 interview with Defense News. The war in Iraq, the global war on terrorism, military transformation and the need to repair and replace weapons lost or simply worn down in Iraq make higher defense budgets inevitable, Kerry said.

But Kerry also said he is willing to delay missile defense plans and cut back other weapons programs to add two divisions to the 10-division Army.

President George W. Bush has made deploying a missile interceptor system a top military priority and plans to spend $9.2 billion on it in 2005 alone. Kerry says that's spending too much too soon.

"I'm not for the rapid deployment of missile defense," the Massachusetts senator said. "I'm for research and development and continuing the testing. But I don't think we're ready for deployment. I think that's a pool of money that's going to be wasted."

Cuts to the missile defense program could yield "several billion" dollars to be spent on other defense needs, he said.

Kerry declined to specify what other programs might also be cut, saying he would order a threat analysis to indicate which systems now in development are no longer top priorities, he said.

"What I'm committed to is transformation of the military for the 21st century," he said, a force that is able to fight terrorism and also able to handle more traditional threats. "I think having a more mobile, more special-operations-oriented, more flexible, rapidly deployable military is very important to us."

Kerry said there is a general need to modernize weapons, develop newer systems for urban warfare and repair or replace older weapons and equipment worn out in Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Those would be budget priorities.

Adding Troops

At least as pressing is the need to add troops to the overburdened U.S. Army.

Of the two divisions Kerry proposes to add - about 40,000 troops - one would be a standard combat division and the other would be a "support division" designed for post-conflict operations. It would include "civil affairs, psychological operations, military police, engineering, all those kinds of components that are part of winning the postwar effort.

"I think we need greater training in that," Kerry said. "Winning a war is not just winning the active war, it's winning the immediate occupation afterwards, which this administration was completely unprepared and ill-equipped to do."

As his red-white-and-blue campaign plane flew south along the California coast, Kerry ticked off what he called the failures and arrogance of the Bush administration. And he confidently spelled out how he would deal with key defense matters, from transformation of U.S. forces to improving relations with U.S. allies.

Kerry disparaged the Bush administration for its failures in the war in Iraq and its failure to hold anyone accountable for them.

"I think there's a serious question as to why [Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld and any of them are still around," he said. "When you miscalculate in war as badly as they have miscalculated, when you don't have equipment that you're supposed to have, when you short the number of troops you should have, when you don't even calculate the postwar process accurately, when you willfully refuse to look at plans drawn up by others in order to do this right, it's beyond negligence. When you pass off looting as a minor happening, it's beyond me.

"The lack of accountability up and down the line sends a message throughout the military that is counter to everything you've learned in the military," he said.

Kerry argued that he is better qualified to manage the diplomatic and war fighting duties of the commander-in-chief.

"I have 20 years experience on the [Senate] Foreign Relations Committee; I have active war fighting experience; I went to chemical, biological warfare school; I have served on the Arms Control Observer group of the Senate; I've been chairman of the Narcotics Terrorism Committee; I've visited bases and troops and countries abroad that are challenges to our nation; and I think I am ready to be commander-in-chief in this new world."

Kerry said he has "a greater level of preparation and a better vision of how we'd make ourselves safe than George Bush has - even now."

From the outset of his presidency, Kerry said he would work to repair relations with U.S. allies. In the Middle East, he said he would strive to get Arab countries more involved in their own policing.

"I believe you have got to turn to the Arab countries and say to them, 'Look, you have a choice, you can have a failed state as your neighbor and maybe a civil war next door, or you get involved.' I think this administration does not have the ability to do that because this administration [disrespected] them so badly going in. I think you need a new president in order to have a new policy in Iraq."

Kerry said he has influence with Middle Eastern leaders.

"I know Hosni Mubarak, I know King Abdullah [of Jordan], I know [Saudi] Crown Prince Abdullah. I have dealt with these people for 15 years or more - not in the case of King Abdullah because he hasn't been there that long, but I know him. He has been in my home. I have worked with him on economic development in Jordan. I have a relationship."

Kerry called for a broad dialogue on the Korean peninsula: "a bilateral negotiation in North Korea where we put the entire force deployment issue on the table along with the nuclear issue and the economic issue and human rights issues, and you really try to come to resolution on the armistice."

And in Europe, he said the United States must work to build up the nascent European defense capability. "It's a good thing for Europe to have a more developed force, and I think we need to work with them to develop it."

Moore's Family Targeted For Harrassment

http://www.hollywoodbitchslap.com/feature.php?feature=1162

There are many disgusting things that go on when someone rocks the political boat in the US. When John McCain ran against George W. Bush for the 2000 Republican Presidential nomination, push-polling from Bush supporters asked people what they thought about the fact that he had a "black baby." When Howard Dean was looking like the front-runner for the 2004 Presidential nomination, right wing groups spread the rumor that he was an 'abortion doctor'. When Kerry won the nomination, internet gossips like Matt Drudge pursued a former intern of his who they implied had enjoyed an affair with the guy. So what's the latest attack plan of those who prefer that a left wing message doesn't get out? Fahrenheit 9/11 director Michael Moore has had his home address published by a group called Focus on the Family. One wonders what they'll say if some lunatic armed with a roadmap to Moore's front door actually does 'focus on the family.

From FOTF's daily newsletter:

----------------------------------------------------------------

Write Michael Moore — at Home —with Your Opinions of “Fahrenheit 9/11”

Filmmaker Michael Moore, writer/director of the new Bush-bashing documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11,” has made quite a career out of marketing himself as a man of the people, a populist everyman who fights passionately for the little guy. That’s why we wanted to make sure “little guys” could let Moore know exactly what they think about his new movie. So, if you have an opinion about the film — in which Moore plays fast and loose with the facts to build a case that President Bush is an idiot and the war in Iraq is all about oil profits — we suggest you send it to the following address:

Michael Moore
[ADDRESS REMOVED]
New York, NY 10024

That’s his home — a condominium this man of the people, so critical of capitalism, spent $4.5 million on seven years ago. And please don’t worry that it’s wrong to use this address; it’s public record, obtained through New York State mortgage records and Federal Election Commission filings. Besides, Moore himself endorses the publication of this kind of information: In “Fahrenheit 9/11,” in fact, he projects on screen the private office number of a congressman whose views he opposes — and urges viewers to call it.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Oh. My. God.

Are these people insane? Moore posts an office phone number of a politician and they post his home address, where his wife and children sleep? Such behavior is not just immoral, it's plain nutso. It's the sort of thing that used to happen to doctors who dared provide abortions for women who needed them, only to be blown to pieces in their cars, homes and offices by uber-religious loons.

There used to be two rules when you went after someone politically. 1) You never go after the wife and kids (something Joseph Wilson, wife of an outed CIA director could suggest no longer holds), and you never expose a person's private family home address so that the person can be intimidated and put in danger. You wanna suggest John McCain's wife had sex with a black man (they actually adopted a kid from Asia), then go right ahead and be that guy. You want to lie that John Kerry had an affair? Go for it, since such things are easily refuted (by the woman herself in that case).

But publishing a home address? This is nightmarish brownshirt behavior that should, by rights, see Moore sue the group for all they have.

The inference is clear - if you didn't like Fahrenheit 9/11, go knock on Michael Moore's door and tell his daughter. You think George Bush is a great man? Send Michael Moore's wife a dead rat.

What this means for people like Moore, or other American documentary filmmakers like Jehane Noujaim (Control Room), Michael Paradies Shoob and Joseph Mealey (Bush's Brain), Nickolas Perry and Harry Thomason (The Hunting of the President), Robert Kane Pappas (Orwell Rolls in His Grave), Richard Ray Perez and Joan Sekler (Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election), and even iconic names like Jonathan Demme (The Agronomist) and Errol Morris (The Fog of War) is that if you speak the truth, and that truth isn't popular, some moron will send out an email to a million other idiots that invites them to appear at your front door and tell you to shut the hell up.

It's heinous, it's disgusting... but what goes around comes around.

If you think putting Michael Moore's wife and children in mortal danger is a disgusting act, call Focus on the Family and ask them why they did it. Their OFFICE phone number is 1-800-232-6459. It's a toll-free call, with all the charges will be paid for by FOTF, so make sure to stay on the line and ask every single question you can think of. Do take into consideration that you are, in all likelihood, talking to someone at a call center, so try to be calm and rational and responsible. No death threats, no cursing, just let them know how you feel about such deplorable acts.

If you prefer to fax them what you think of their 'focus' on Michael Moore's family, the FOTF fax number is 719-548-4670

Incidentally, when I called the number and asked why they gave out Moore's address, their line was "because our newsletter subscribers requested it." So I asked how to subscribe, duly did so, and then asked for the address of James Dobson, the man who runs FOTF. My request was politely declined. I guess we need more 'members' making such a request before they'll give up the info.

Don't let these people, who claim to be a Christian organization, get away with something so patently unchristian as putting a man's family at risk. Call them on their BS - at their expense - and remind them that an open and free discourse of ideas is not just one of the fabrics of American society, but works to benefit both sides of the political spectrum. To spread the idea that it's okay to harass someone you disagree with at home, is just plain disgusting.

In the end, is this something Jesus would have done?

Spoiler Review - F9/11

It his latest documentary, filmmaker Michael Moore is doing no less than trying to take down the Bush administration. From the opening scene depicting the 2000 election debacle to the anguished words of a 9/11 widow to horrifying footage of the Iraq war's human cost, no investigative stone is left unturned and no punches are pulled.

The entire movie is a damning indictment of George W. Bush and his administration. Moore reveals the Bush family connections to the Saudi royal family as well as its connections to the bin Ladens, moving back and forth from humor to deadly seriousness to illustrate his points throughout the film.

Unlike his other documentaries, (Roger & Me, The Big One, Bowling For Columbine) the director chooses to remain largely absent from the film itself choosing instead to spend most of his time narrating while allowing accumulated video footage from various sources make his case for him. His most prominent scenes are his attempts to read the USA PATRIOT Act to members of Congress from a moving ice cream truck, and to get Congressmen who supported the invasion of Iraq to sign their children up for military service.

There are scenes that make you laugh (asking "who's your daddy" during shots of George H.W. and George Bush with their Saudi business partners); scenes that make you cry (a 9/11 widow explaining that her only reason for living is to find out why her husband is dead so she can move on with her life); scenes that make you angry (an apathetic--and spaced-out--Britney Spears voicing her full support for Bush); and scenes that make you want to turn away (footage of mangled, burnt and broken bodies). As I said, Moore pulls no punches.

The film has made Moore's enemies froth at the mouth, which is nothing new. What is new however are the lengths to which they have gone to prevent Farenheit 9/11's American release. Despite winning the Cannes Film Festival Award, underwriter Disney (whose subsidiary Miramax financed and produced the movie), fearing reprisal from Florida governor Jeb Bush against its Orlando theme park, refused to release the film in the States. When Miramax producers Bob And Harvey Weinstein bought the distribution rights back from Disney and secured an American release from Lions Gate Films and IFC Studios, conservative group Move America Forward (MAF) launched a blistering campaign in order to intimidate theater chains into not showing Moore's film. And of course the usual assortment of Internet crackpots began to hammer away at Moore's fact-checking skills, to no avail.

Fortunately for liberal director, MoveOn.org and other organizations have launched a counter-campaign to try and convince theater chains to stand up to MAF's intimidation techniques. Only time will tell if MoveOn.org will succeed, however. In order to see Farenheit 9/11, I had to spend roughly an hour and a half taking public transportation to see the film at the Cedar Lee theater in Cleveland Heights. No movie house in Cleveland proper is carrying the film, a possible sign that theater chains are too scared of MAF to risk any sort of trouble from anti-Moore activists.

All in all, Farenheit 9/11 is definitely worth watching. Indeed, if the crowds at the Cedar Lee are any indication, Cleveland Cinemas, which owns the Cedar Lee, may have to show the film in some of its other movie houses just to accomodate the number moviegoers who want to see Moore's film. That spells good news for lovers of documentaries (not to mention fans of Michael Moore), and bad news for the Bushes.

I just had to delete 'Skwurl' from this tribe for posting negative comments about Al and his show.

Now, I don't necessarily like suppressing dissent but I did create this tribe for people who are FANS of Al. Constructive criticism has its place and it is most welcome. But if anyone wants to hate on Al they can take it to another tribe.

Of course, I am willing to be open-minded about this though. I will now conduct a vote: Should the tribe be expanded to include the Franken-haters? I will make whatever changes to the format of the tribe, if any, after tallying votes from all the members. Thanks.

Is Air America playing in your area, or do you still have to settle for listening to the streaming audio over the 'net?

I'm looking for ideas that people can use to get Air America in their area, places like Cleveland, Philadelphia, Flint, etc. that aren't yet carrying it. I figure that if we can come up with some really good ideas we can try them out in our cities so we don't have to keep going to the comp to listen.

If you are a fan of Air America's progressive talk show network...especially if you are in LA or Chicago, please go to the link and sign a petition that, hopefully, can go a long way in getting AAR back on in these markets.

SO far we have a growning number of people who are signing the petition....including, apperantly, Amber Tamblyn, the girl who talks to God on "Joan of Arcadia" (and you don;t want to piss off a close personal friend of The Big Guy, do ya?).

I think we will need about 5000 signitures, so help repead the word by going to the site, signing and leaving a message, and pass the URL around.

Its that....or all Rush all the time gloating through November!

Welcome to the Al Franken Tribe!

Welcome to my humble contribution to tribe.net, the Al Franken tribe! I know there's a tribe set up by fans of Michael Moore, but why should he have all the fun? ;^)

For those of you unfamiliar with the work of Mr. Franken, a little background is in order:

Formerly a writer and star of the hit TV sketch comedy 'Saturday Night Live,' Al graduated to film and--failing that--political satire, where he has enjoyed great success.

His first foray into political satire was the book 'Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot And Other Observations'. Needless to say, it skewered the right-wing radio talking head and other members of the infant neoconservative movement. The book did quite well at Limbaugh's expense, got some laughs, and made Al a lot of money. Also, it made him some enemies, but they were still few and relatively powerless to do anything besides bitch and moan.

Then came his next two books, 'Why Not Me? the Making And Unmaking of the Franken Presidency' and 'Oh the Things I know'. They made Al more money, and more enemies, but still not quite the level of fame his genius deserved.

And then George W. Bush invaded Iraq.

Unwilling to let the smear from the right-wing media go without a challenge, Al began to delve into the countless lies told by the now powerful neocon movement. His plan was to expose liars in the media such as Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity, and expose the lies of Bush and his cronies who pushed for the illegal and unnecessary invasion of the country THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11.

All might have gone as before; make some money, get some laughs at the far right's expense and then work on the next book. Except Al made the fateful decision to plug his as-yet-unpublished work at a book convention in L.A. in May 2003.

Sharing the stage with Al were columnist Molly Ivins, and none other than Bill O'Lielly...er, O'Reilly...himself, who was promoting his own book--'Living With Herpes'.

After exposing O'Reilly in a lie over an award his former show, INSIDE EDITION had won, the infamous Fox News Channel talking head blew his top, and later pushed Fox News to sue Al. Not for libel, mind you, which might have been apporpriate considering the charge leveled against O'Reilly. No, the suit was filed over something even more insidious...

The suit was filed over Franken's use of the term "fair and balanced" in the subtitle of his new book, which was called 'Lies And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them - A Fair And Balanced Look At the Right'. I kid you not.

The federal judge presiding over the case threw the suit out of court, ridiculing it as "wholly without merit, both factually and legally." Fox declined to appeal, as the suit had the unintended effect of causing pre-order sales of Al's book to skyrocket weeks before its publication and gaining the satirist mucho publicity.

Since then, Mr. Franken's book has continued to outsell numerous attack pieces published by the far right, most notably O'Reilly's 'Living With Herpes'. Al's ideological enemies seem to have spent the bulk of their free time trying to discredit and smear him over the Internet, to no avail. Al still continues to tell the truth, and expose the lying liars for what they are.
